An old statue is returning to Athens. It is called "The Ephebe". Ephebe means a young boy. For 23 years, the statue was not in the city. Now it stands again in a square. It is Agios Sostis Square.
The statue is very tall. It is two and a half meters. A sculptor, Thanassis Apartis, made it. He made it in 1940. It was made in a workshop in Paris.
The statue went through difficult years. It was moved many times. It also had damage. For many years it was kept safe and was waiting.
The old residents of a neighborhood love the statue. They lived in Polygono, a neighborhood for refugees. The Ephebe reminds them of their old neighborhood. For years they were asking for the statue back.
On Friday, October 16, the statue came to the square. The mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, was there. The residents were there too. The mayor thanked the residents. He said that the Ephebe belongs again to the daily life of the city.
