In Athens there is a special workshop. It is next to the President's house. There they sew the clothes of the Evzones. The Evzones are the soldiers with the skirt. They guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma. On Monday, the Australian ambassador came to the workshop.
All the clothes are made by hand. The fustanella has 400 pleats. Each pleat is one year. It recalls the years when Greece was not free. One fustanella needs 30 meters of white fabric. The vest has beautiful embroidery. The red cap has a black tassel. The shoes are red and heavy. One pair weighs three kilos! Each sole has 120 nails.
In a few days, the Evzones will travel to Australia. Many Greeks live there. They will walk in Sydney in their uniforms. Then they will go to Canberra. There they will celebrate the 28th of October with the Greeks of Australia.
